Nearly three weeks after experiencing unauthorized activity on its network, the Port of Seattle is still working to recover from a suspected cyberattack that affected various operations. While the travel experience at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is now considered “normal,” with flight and baggage information visible on digital screens, the airport and Port’s websites remain unavailable. Additionally, certain services such as the airport’s lost and found and visitor pass program are still inaccessible. Some maritime operations managed by the Port of Seattle are also in the process of recovery.

The nature of the cyberattack has not yet been disclosed by the Port officials. However, the incident did not impact flights or security checkpoints at Sea-Tac Airport, nor did it disrupt cruise travel. Nevertheless, the attack resulted in a WiFi shutdown at the airport and caused delays in baggage services. Furthermore, many flight information screens within the terminal were rendered nonfunctional.

Due to these disruptions, airport workers had to use manual methods, such as writing flight numbers and carousel locations on large sheets of paper and issuing handwritten boarding passes and bag tags. Speaking at a recent Port of Seattle Commission meeting, Port of Seattle Executive Director Steve Metruck acknowledged that the investigation into the cyber incident is still ongoing. He mentioned that after detecting the unauthorized activity, critical systems were isolated, and there have been no new intrusions since then.

Metruck described the crisis as a catalyst for expediting certain technical changes that were already in the pipeline or on the wish list. He stated that more information and lessons learned will be shared once the investigation is finalized. In the meantime, he offered some initial insights from the past few weeks, emphasizing that cyber incidents are becoming increasingly common, citing the recent cyberattack on Highline Public Schools as an example.

Experts interviewed for this report noted that attacks on critical infrastructure and public entities like schools are on the rise. Metruck advised both businesses and government organizations to invest in cybersecurity and be prepared in case of a cyberattack gaining access to their systems. He urged organizations to have workarounds in place for their most essential IT-based processes and emphasized the importance of having plans to maintain operations and ensure timely payment for work performed, even if key systems are inaccessible.

The Port of Seattle has set up a webpage where updates about the outage can be found. The investigation into the cyberattack is ongoing, and the Port will continue sharing relevant information as it becomes available.
