# Amazon Offers Prime Membership to Hourly Workers in the US: A Win-Win Move

One of the major changes in this package is the inclusion of Prime membership as a benefit for these workers. Prime membership, which currently costs $139 per year, offers various benefits such as free delivery, access to Amazon Music and Prime Video, and more. While the financial value of Prime membership may not be the biggest component of the compensation package for these workers, it holds significant symbolic value. It ensures that every worker is a member of the same club, further fostering a sense of belonging and unity within the Amazon community.

The addition of Prime membership to the benefits package is not unique to Amazon. Other big retailers like Costco have been providing similar perks to their employees for a long time. Costco offers free executive memberships to its employees and even allows them to offer memberships to their family and friends. It’s a strategy that has worked well for companies like Costco, and Amazon seems to be following suit.

It’s important to note that not all Amazon employees are eligible for Prime benefits. Independent Amazon Delivery Service Partner (DSP) company drivers and certain salaried corporate and tech employees are not included in this program. However, considering this step taken by Amazon, it wouldn’t be surprising if the company extends Prime benefits to more employees in the future.

The move to provide Prime benefits to hourly workers has been recommended by Gisela Hausmann, an author and logistics industry veteran who worked at an Amazon delivery hub in South Carolina. Hausmann believes that this gesture could help Amazon become “Earth’s Best Employer,” generating goodwill among the workforce and making workers more likely to advocate for the company in their communities.

While the exact number of hourly workers who will receive Prime benefits is yet to be determined, Amazon estimates that it has around 800,000 hourly workers in its US fulfillment and delivery network. The eligibility for Prime benefits starts after 90 days of employment and applies to full-time, part-time, and reduced-time hourly employees in Tiers 1-3, as well as Level 4 hourly managerial roles.

By offering Prime membership to its hourly workers, Amazon takes a significant step towards prioritizing the well-being and satisfaction of its employees. This move not only aligns with the company’s goal of becoming a top employer but also strengthens the link between workers and customers.
