Netflix subscribers needing something a little more unconventional to stream this Christmas should consider watching Better Watch Out. If you are a fan of horror comedy movies, I can’t recommend Better Watch Out enough, and you need to go stream it on Netflix ASAP. If you need a little more context, read on, but I gotta stress that this is the kind of movie that’s best enjoyed with as little information as possible.

Similarities with Home Alone

If you are someone that grew up liking Home Alone, you may have an even greater appreciation for Better Watch Out, as it has similar vibes, but with a far more sinister twist. Home Alone is undoubtedly one of the greatest Christmas movies of all time.

  • Flips the Concept: Better Watch Out takes the classic holiday scenario and turns it on its head, offering a chilling alternative to the heartwarming hijinks of the original film.

Positive Reception

But you don’t have to take my word for it. Better Watch Out earned positive reviews from critics at the time of its release and has an impressive 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • Horror Comedy: It favors horror more than comedy, delivering a highly entertaining experience perfect for the Christmas season.
  • A Standout in Genre: It’s certainly one of the best Christmas horror movies out there, and my personal favorite.

Plot Twist and Experience

WARNING: Better Watch Out SPOILERS follow for the rest of the article.

What makes Better Watch Out so much fun to watch blind is that it leads you to believe it’s one kind of movie, only to take a sharp left-turn and deliver something completely unexpected. Initially, it appears to be an R-rated take on Home Alone, with main character Luke and his babysitter Ashley fighting against a home invader. However, the apparent intruder is significantly more dangerous than the bumbling thieves of Home Alone.

  • The Twist: Luke orchestrates the home invasion as a setup to play the hero and win over Ashley. When she realizes the truth, he knocks her out and terrorizes her and her boyfriend for the remainder of the film.
  • Creative Terror: Throughout the movie, Luke employs gruesome traps that echo Kevin McAllister’s antics, featuring elements like a swinging paint can and a loose tarantula.
