After more than two decades of overseeing the remarkable growth of Amazon’s real estate footprint, John Schoettler, the company’s global real estate leader, is retiring at the end of 2024. Throughout his tenure, Schoettler played a key role in expanding Amazon’s office space from around 1 million square feet in January 2001 to an astounding 65 million square feet across over 60 countries today. This includes the establishment of a regional headquarters in Seattle and Bellevue, Washington, as well as the creation of a second headquarters in Arlington, Virginia.

Under Schoettler’s leadership, Amazon navigated various challenges, including clashes with Seattle civic leaders, the shift to remote work during the pandemic, and the adaptation of office spaces to accommodate hybrid work models. His retirement comes at a time when the company is preparing to bring its employees back to the office for five days a week starting next year.

Taking over Schoettler’s position as vice president in charge of Amazon’s Global Real Estate & Facilities team will be Shannon Loew. With 20 years of experience in the real estate industry, Loew joined Amazon in January 2023 and has been overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Global Real Estate & Facilities team since then.

Schoettler announced his retirement at a recent Puget Sound Business Journal event where he was honored for his contributions as an Amazon executive and in the community. Amazon expressed gratitude for Schoettler’s leadership and his instrumental role in not only creating collaborative office spaces for the company’s global corporate employees but also integrating Amazon into the communities it invests in, thereby supporting downtown economies worldwide.

Some of the community initiatives spearheaded by Schoettler include the establishment of the Mary’s Place Family Center at Amazon’s Seattle headquarters and the Neighborhood Small Business Relief Fund, which provided financial assistance to small businesses during the pandemic when employees were working from home.

Apart from his role at Amazon, Schoettler is also engaged in the board of directors of Seattle Children’s Hospital and serves on the Board of Regents at Washington State University. Previously, he served as the chair of the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the boards of the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Seattle Association, and Cascade Public Media (KCTS9).

With John Schoettler’s retirement, Shannon Loew is poised to continue Amazon’s real estate growth and contribute to the company’s ongoing success in the global market.
